Childhood Fears

As night steals the light of day,
darkness hides the beauty
that the sun emphasized,
a world of life fades to gray.
A distance spreads between
the line of sight and the mind
for the dark is rather ominous,
a great trickster, deceptive-
only to the night is it confined.
Tired eyes struggle in fright,
fight to stay alert, avoid sleep,
as the walls melt into endless black,
corners, walls fade away, exposing
every possibility of nothing in sight.
